our story

Welcome to a different kind of jewelry store.

Armed with an art degree, a small amount of equipment and a passion for design, Linda McGill began her jewelry career in her hometown,  Durham, NC.  It was 1976, and the start of Jewelsmith coincided with a time of booming growth in the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and RTP-Research Triangle Park).  Prestigious universities like Duke, UNC, NC State and NC Central attracted an increasingly large number of highly educated and multi-cultural people to the area.  As the community became a hot-spot for the arts, Jewelsmith emerged as "the" destination for unparalleled jewelry design and superior customer service.

Before long, the store moved from a small workshop to a larger, more visible location in the Erwin Square tower near Parizade Restaurant on Main Street.  Linda assembled a knowledgeable team of jewelry professionals who adhere to her core philosophy that ethics would always be their highest priority.  She hired talented people and provided an atmosphere that allowed them to flourish.  The designers/sales people, goldsmiths, gemologists and administrative staff all work together on each piece with the common goal of exceeding client expectations with both our finished product and our customer service-centric environment.

Our goal is to combine world-class jewelry design with hometown approachability. We are renowned for creating whimsical custom jewelry work and we also provide a fun and unique shopping experience.

We offer an award-winning jewelry repair service thanks to Phillip, Molly, Cameron, Patrick, Bryson and Denis--our expert team of goldsmiths who work their magic by not only breathing new life into broken jewelry, but also producing stunning custom pieces by hand. Years of experience and a passion for exceeding client expectations make our group of goldsmiths a lean, mean metal-working machine, whether your jewelry just needs a little TLC or you're coming to us with a piece in need of a complete overhaul.

Both of our gemologists, Katherine Nielsen, and Tracy Hayes have attained the highest level of certification, CGA (Certified Gemologist Appraiser) in order to provide expert jewelry appraisals.  Katherine has also been serving as President of North Carolina American Gem Society Guild.

Our store, located in Durham, NC, is filled with original designs in just about every price range, including engagement rings,  wedding rings, earrings, bracelets, pendants and more. In addition to the traditional precious metals like gold, silver and platinum, we use a number of alternative materials such as wood, palladium, neoprene and stainless steel.

We are also passionate about protecting the environment through our metal recycling efforts. We encourage the re-use of gemstones and the use of environmentally friendly alternatives to chemicals used in the process of making jewelry.

Jewelsmith is committed to selling diamonds and gemstones that are socially responsible. In addition to using conflict-free gemstones, we are happy to offer diamonds from the mines of Canada. Canadian mines pay their workers fair wages, contribute to the mining communities, and maintain higher environmental standards. Please let one of us know if you're interested in using Canadian diamonds in your Jewelsmith creation.

Everyone at Jewelsmith strives to live up to the store's stellar reputation that's been 40 years in the making by continuing to design and build world-class jewelry, provide supreme customer service, and--most importantly--to make our clients smile time and time again. We hope to see you soon!
