Turn Your Old Jewelry Into Something New
JEWELSMITH | DURHAM, NC | HANDCRAFTED ON SITE SINCE 1976
People often ask:
What can I do with my old jewelry?
Most of us have some jewelry just hanging out in the bottom of our jewelry box or safe deposit box.
Maybe it was passed down from loved ones, but isn't your style or in wearable condition.
A special gift that marked a special time in your life, but now looks dated or is worn out.
Whatever the reason, there it is, lying unworn.
There are lots of options to breathe new life into your old jewelry! In addition to resetting your sentimental diamonds and gemstones, your gold, platinum and silver can be used too!
You can transform your gold with Same Molecule refining, trade your gold, platinum or silver toward your purchase, and in some cases, we can incorporate your old jewelry itself.

Transform Your Gold with Same Molecule Refining
With our "Same Molecule Refining" service, you can change any karat or color of gold into any other karat or color!
What Is Gold Refining?
Refining is the process of separating the pure gold from gold alloys like 14K or 18K. Most refining is done in huge lots where your gold is mixed with everyone else's. That means you're unlikely to get your same gold back.
How Is Same Molecule Refining Different?
Our service refines only your gold so the pure 24K gold that you get back is yours and only your sentimental gold. For example, you could bring us your grandparents' 18K yellow gold wedding rings and your 14K white gold sweet 16 necklace and get back the pure gold from your exact jewelry.
Same Molecule Refining is a specialized gold refining process where your gold is refined in isolation, never mixed with anyone else's metal. Traditional large-batch refining combines thousands of customers' gold together, so the pure gold you receive back is statistically yours, but not literally yours. With Same Molecule Refining, the gold that comes out is the exact gold that went in — the same atoms, from your own heirloom pieces, returned to you as pure 24K.
Note that there is a 1 ounce minimum for this service.
What Can Your Refined Gold Become?
The pure gold from your old jewelry can then be turned into any karat like 14K, 18K, 22K and any color such as yellow, white, rose or even green gold! That means you can have a custom jewelry project created for you with your sentimental family jewelry.

You can trade your gold, silver or platinum for recycle credit.
Your credit can be applied to any purchase including ready-to-wear jewelry, custom-made jewelry or store credit to use later.
Or you can receive a check for the value of your gold or platinum.
Due to the current volatility of the silver market, we can only give you credit for your silver toward a purchase.

Use Your Gold, Platinum or Silver Directly
In some cases your gold, silver or platinum can be used in your new custom jewelry without any refining.
This pendant was created using two sentimental family wedding bands and an engagement ring. There are lots of creative and meaningful ways to incorporate family jewelry like this into something you can wear and keep close to your heart.
Another way to repurpose your gold without refining is to melt it and reform into another shape. To give you the best result, our team of designers and goldsmiths will advise you if your old jewelry would work well for this type of process. Not all old gold jewelry can be transformed in this way, but our team will examine your metal carefully and give you your best options.

What can I do with my old gold, silver, or platinum jewelry?
You have three options at Jewelsmith. You can transform gold using our Same Molecule Refining service — where we refine only your gold and return it to you as pure 24K, ready to be made into any karat or color for a new custom piece. You can trade it for recycle credit toward any purchase, or receive a check for its value. Or, in some cases, your metal can be used directly in a new custom design without any refining at all. We'll examine your jewelry and walk you through your best options.
What is Same Molecule Refining?
Same Molecule Refining is our process of refining only your gold — not mixing it with anyone else's — so the pure 24K gold you receive back came exclusively from your own jewelry. Traditional refining is done in large lots where your gold is combined with everyone else's, meaning you're unlikely to get your exact gold back. With Same Molecule Refining, your sentimental gold stays yours from start to finish. There is a 1 troy ounce minimum.
What karats and colors can my refined gold be made into?
Any karat and any color. Your refined gold can be made into 14K, 18K, or 22K gold in yellow, white, rose, or even green gold — giving you full flexibility for your new custom jewelry project.
Can I use my grandmother's diamonds or gemstones in a new piece?
Absolutely. If your old jewelry contains diamonds or gemstones you'd like to keep, we can reset them into your new custom design. There is no corking fee for using your own stones. Learn more about custom jewelry
Can I trade my silver jewelry for cash?
Due to the current volatility of the silver market, we can offer recycle credit toward a purchase for your silver, but we are not currently able to offer cash payouts for silver. Gold and platinum can be paid out as a check or credited toward a purchase.
