It was my pleasure to work with Patrick on two occasions in the past year. He took two diamonds out of engagement rings belonging to my grandmother and mother and created beautiful timeless rings for my daughters. Priceless keepsakes. A wonderful experience and highly recommend Jewelsmith

I took my wedding band and engagement ring to Jewelsmith for a makeover. I worked with May, who was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. She helped me create an absolutely stunning redesign of my rings, using my original stones. The finished products are an absolute perfect result of what I had imagined. Can’t find these in any store, only on my finger. I absolutely love them. Thank you May. Thank you, Jewelsmith.

I worked with Mary to make a custom ring and to get a ring appraised. Mary was very professional and knowledgeable. She made the process seamless. The custom ring was beautifully made and great care was taken to incorporate a family stone it. I would highly recommend Jewelsmith and their staff for all of your jewelry needs.

Reuse and Recycle Your Own Gold:
With our process of "same molecule refining" you can not only use your own gold, but you can turn it into any color or karat of gold! The original pure sentimental gold from your old jewelry is removed and can then be made into any type of gold. For example, your 18K yellow gold can become 14K white gold.
Traditional refining combines your gold with other gold in a large lot and the pure gold that is returned isn't necessarily your original gold. With "Same Molecule Refining" it is only the 24K pure gold from your jewelry that is returned. An ounce of gold is required for this process and only gold jewelry is eligible.
Reuse Your Metal:
In some cases we can use your metal directly to create something new. Our goldsmiths and designers will help you determine the methods that will give you the best outcome for your special project.
Trade for Recycle Credit:
You can also trade your gold and platinum for recycle credit toward your jewelry makeover.

Reserve Your Free Design ConsultationI went to Jewelsmith to have the diamond from my mother's engagement ring made into a pendant necklace. They made me feel like royalty from the moment I walked in the door. I felt like part of the design team as my piece was being made from scratch! There were no surprises. They helped me understand how to ask for my heart's desire, and the final product is amazing. Fantastic customer service, no upselling. I love the fact that Jewelsmith supports community arts organizations as well. Brava!
On a whim, I asked Jewelsmith to create new pieces from family rings that did not match my taste. Working with their team each step of the way, the finished jewelry literally took my breath away. I could not believe that they were the same stones. My vintage jewelry is now being enjoyed instead of sitting in the safety deposit box. THANK YOU to everyone at Jewelsmith for your craftsmanship.
I’m so happy we found Jewelsmith! They transformed Mom’s ring into a beautiful new set and it is perfect. Thank you Mary and Tracy!
Tiffany listened to my vision for my ring and helped me design a ring that I am absolutely thrilled to wear!! It was important for me to preserve the diamond from my original engagement ring as the central portion while also adding new elements. This ring does all of those things and makes me smile each time I look at it! Highly recommend and will return to Jewelsmith for all future needs!! Thank you so much Tiffany!!
Jewelry Makeover FAQ's
We're here to help! If you don't see the answers to your questions here, please contact us.
Contact a DesignerA jewelry makeover is when Jewelsmith's team of designers and goldsmiths transforms your old, broken, or unworn jewelry into a new custom design that honors your unique story. We can combine meaningful pieces from loved ones into a single new design, reset diamonds or gemstones, and recycle or reuse your precious metals in the new piece.
Heirloom redesign is the process of taking inherited or sentimental jewelry, wedding bands, family rings, estate pieces, and reimagining them into a wearable design that reflects who you are today, while preserving the emotional history of the original pieces.
The first step is a free design consultation with our team of designers, gemologists, and goldsmiths. You can book in person or virtually. We'll listen to your story, look at your existing jewelry, and help you envision what's possible.
Yes. Your personalized design consultation is at no charge. There's no obligation to proceed.
Bring any jewelry you'd like to transform or incorporate even broken pieces or pieces you simply don't wear anymore. If you have inspiration images or a general idea of the style you love, bring those too. If you have nothing but a budget and a gut feeling, that's completely fine.
Most likely, yes. Our gemology team will carefully inspect your gems to ensure they can be reset safely. We love adding sentimental value to your custom piece.
No. We never charge a corking fee. We encourage clients to reset and repurpose their own diamonds and gemstones. We love the added sentimental value and the stories they bring to a new design.
Yes. You can always use your heirloom gold or platinum for recycle credit toward your design, with no limits on how much of the price that credit can cover. In some cases, we can use your metal directly in the new piece if the result will be structurally sound.
Same Molecule Refining is Jewelsmith's process of refining only your gold, not mixing it with anyone else's, so the 24K gold you receive back came exclusively from your own jewelry. Traditional refining mixes everyone's gold together, meaning you likely won't get your same gold back. With Same Molecule Refining, your grandparents' rings stay your grandparents' rings, just reborn. There is a 1-ounce minimum.
On average, a custom jewelry project takes about 6–8 weeks. Factors like gemstone sourcing, recutting, or unusual materials can affect the timeline. Your designer will give you a specific timeframe based on your project and any important dates.
It starts with a free design consultation, followed by a custom design proposal and estimate. Once you approve the design and a 50% deposit is placed, our goldsmiths begin handcrafting your piece on-site in Durham, NC. You'll see your design come to life through drawings, CAD renderings and/or a wax model before final production. Learn more about our custom process.
No. Pricing is based on materials and labor. We work with a wide range of budgets and are always transparent about costs at every stage, no surprises.
A 50% deposit is required once a design and estimate have been agreed upon. The balance is due at completion.
Yes. We offer virtual consultations and have completed makeover projects for clients across the country. We can ship a wax model so you can see the dimensions in person before we proceed.
